The Effects of Health Education on Self-Care, Self-Efficacy, and Resourcefulness among Patients with Chemotherapy

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the effects of health education on self-care, self-efficacy, and resourcefulness of the patients who underwent chemotherapy.
This study used a quasi-experimental study of nonequivalent 2control group pretest-posttest design. The total of 49 patients admitted to Y university hospital for the chemotherapy participated in the study. Among them 25 patients belonged to the experimental group, and the other 24 patients belonged to the control group The data were collected from the August 10, 2003 through september 20, 2003.
The instruments used in the study were Self-care performance Scale developed by Lee(2001), Self-efficacy Scale by Oh(1994). arid Resourcefulness Scale by Sah(1997).
The data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 11.0. A chi-square test was used to test hemogenecity of the experimental & the control group in terms of general characteristics. Two-way ANOVA was employed to test research hypothesis.
The findings of the study are as follows:
1. The first hypothesis, "The education offered to patients who underwent chemotherapy will enhance their self-care performance." was supported.
2. The second hypothesis, "The education offered to the patients who underwent chemotherapy will enhance tYoungnam University hospital. heir self-efficacy." was supported.
3. The third hypothesis, "The education offered to the patients who underwent chemotherapy will enhance their resourcefulness." was rejected.
Based on the study results, recommendations for future studies are suggested as follows.
1. Repeated studies are suggested using refined education programs to increase self-care and self-efficacy of the chemotherapy patients.
2. Development of education programs long-term and repeated application of the These are suggested to enhance resourcefulness of the chemotherapy patients.
